Systems: A Short Story

Mark and Elara are experienced consultants whose professional partnership has taken them across the world, helping organisations navigate uncertainty, change, and dysfunction. As they travel from London to Frankfurt, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur to deliver a major client engagement, the systems they analyse in boardrooms begin to mirror the growing distance in their own relationship. What begins as subtle misalignment surrounding unfinished conversations, shifting routines, and competing interpretations of the same events slowly develops into something harder to ignore. While they continue to perform with competence and unity in public, privately they find themselves inhabiting increasingly separate worlds.Told through the reflective lens of a narrator trained to see patterns, feedback loops, and structural failure, this short story explores how relationships rarely end through a single event. Instead, they unravel through accumulated misunderstandings, changing identities, and the gradual realisation that two people no longer share the same version of reality.
