Norbert Schneider - Scha Ma Mal (CD)

Scha Ma Mal by Norbert Schneider is a CD that marks his stylistic move from English language blues toward a distinctly Viennese sound, blending elements of Wienerlied, blues and soul into an accessible form of Austrian dialect pop. The album showcases warm, acoustic band arrangements, laid-back grooves and storytelling lyrics delivered in Viennese dialect, balancing melancholy, irony and understated humor. Its overall mood is intimate and retro-tinged, yet polished, reflecting Schneider’s roots in blues while embracing the melodic and lyrical tradition of the classic Vienna song. Among the tracks, pieces like Vom Buxbaam und Kirschen, Ana hat immer des Bummerl and Die Wöd draht si weida highlight the mixture of sentimental themes and everyday scenes, often with a bittersweet twist. Songs such as Blues für zwa underline that his blues background remains present in phrasing and harmony even as the focus shifts toward Wienerlied and dialect pop. Scha Ma Mal was released in 2013 and is often regarded as a key turning point in Norbert Schneider’s discography, establishing his signature blend of dialect songwriting, roots music and Viennese charm.
