Helling Poetry Collection

While raising three children in the 1960s and 1970s, and a husband who traveled often for his job, Shirley Helling found that writing poems helped lift her mood when she was down. Helling writes about life as one of 11 children growing up on a sugar beet farm in western Nebraska, raising a family, traveling with her husband after the children were gone, and finally, moving across the country later in life to eastern Washington to be near two of her grown children. Writing poetry became a habit that she continued into her 80s when the COVID-19 flu pandemic of 2020 interrupted the regular meetings of the poetry club to which she belonged. The poems in this collection are grouped by decade and each decade is introduced with a brief overview of what was happening in Helling's life at that time.
